I finally signed up on Facebook this week after being urged to do so by multiple friends. Until recently, Facebook was used by cool kids and early adopters. Now it has hit the ranks of professionals, and it's really exploding.
Facebook is everything that LinkedIn tried to be but couldn't. I've been on LinkedIn for a couple years, and found it sort of interesting, but never very useful. Join Facebook now, and avoid the LinkedIn IPO.
